The Kardashian family skyrocketed to fame when they launched their series Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2007. Becoming reality stars helped promote the many brands and products created by Kardashian sisters Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie.
Kardashian West is used to public scrutiny, yet insists there is one aspect to her persona that people often get wrong.
Starting the Kardashian empire
In a 2017 interview, Kardashian West described how her journey into celebrity status began. Owner of the clothing and accessories store DASH with sisters Kourtney and Chloe, the mom of 4 recalled offers for various projects coming her way.
“At the time, there was nothing specific,” Kardashian West told Interview. “We were getting calls to do this and that. Our thinking was that maybe there’s power in saying yes to things. I look back on certain business ventures and say, ‘Well, I wouldn’t do that today.’ I did everything from endorse a cupcake mix to travel to Vegas to open up the Sugar Factory.”
When the opportunity for Keeping Up with the Kardashians came along, she had to convince her sisters to join the show.

“My initial reasoning for wanting to do the show was to blow up our clothing store,” Kardashian West explained. “I had to talk my sisters into it. They really didn’t want to do a TV show. I was like, ‘You guys, it’ll be amazing press for our store.’”
Kim Kardashian West shows no signs of slowing down
When asked how she envisioned her career to take shape prior to her current stardom, Kardashian West had a certain goal in mind.
“I would look in a magazine—there was this page in Us Weekly that I remember vividly,” the reality star recalled. “It’s just a spread, and it has one person and all the fashion moments that they love. I remember looking at it, being like, ‘It would be my dream to be this person.’”
Now that she is that person in a myriad of media coverage, Kardashian West expressed gratitude for how far she’s come and has no intention of putting on the brakes.
“I still don’t take anything for granted,” the KUWTK star shared. “I’m genuinely still so excited about my career. I feel like now is when someone would turn off and think… ‘I’ve done pretty well for myself. I can chill for a bit.’ But instead I’m like, ‘No, let me turn it up.’”
‘I am not lazy’
While Kardashian West is used to the label of being “famous just for being famous,” she came to expect a certain level of credit for her impressive resume of accomplishments over the years.
“I used to say, ‘I love being underestimated,’” she told Interview. “But now when I hear, ‘They’re so not talented’… I’m kind of like, ‘Okay, give a girl a little respect.’ If I’m so not talented, if I do nothing, then how is my career my reality? And I poke fun at it, like when I was on the cover of Forbes, I posted the hashtag #NotBadForAGirlWithNoTalent.”
Though she still considers comments from naysayers as motivation, Kardashian West is emphatic on her strong work ethic.
“I don’t mind being underestimated because it does fuel me,” she said. “But after a while, I do feel like, ‘C’mon, you can recognize a little bit.’ You can say a lot of things about me, but you cannot say I don’t work hard. I don’t sing, I don’t dance, I don’t act. But I am not lazy.”
